Much Wenlock

Welcome to Much Wenlock, the home of the modern Olympics - no! We're not kidding!

In 1850 Local surgeon William Penny-Brookes (1809 - 1895), who introduced physical education into British schools, inspired the fore-runner of the modern Olympic Games for the "promotion of moral, physical and intellectual improvement" and although the Game's venue is now decided by international committee rather than by the Wenlock Olympian Society, we still hold our own Olympics here every July - the other Olympics are also doing quite well too!

Ludlow (14 miles) is a beautiful Mediaeval town with a lovely castle, renowned restaurants, Leisure Centre and Ludlow Assembly Rooms which put on a good variety of shows/talks.

Bridgnorth (8 miles) is famous for The Severn Valley Railway, a lovely day out on an old steam train which travels as far as Kidderminster.  Bridgnorth is also the home of a funicular railway - only one of a few in Britain I believe - I hope you have a good head for heights.  There is also a Leisure Centre and a small theatre called Theatre on The Steps which puts on a variety of amateur plays/shows.

Ironbridge (10 miles) home of the world famous iron bridge, has plenty of museums for young and old and Blists Hill is a lovely day out in a Victorian town where everything is just as it was then - including the money!

Shrewsbury (19 miles).  A lovely Elizabethan town with castle with good shopping centre and beautiful gardens in the Quarry Park and Dingle.  There is also Attingham Park nearby - a National Trust property.

Church Stretton (12 miles)– A lovely little town with a good antiques centre, individual shops and plenty of walking in the surrounding hills and valleys.
